Personally, I do think it is the hottest movie around. Robert Downey Jr. was very good in his role; I really thought he did a great job. Very convincing and believable as an actor should be, but he seemed to help bring that something extra to the movie. It is something that can really help to appeal to a wide audience, by not just being 'yeah, bash bang boom', but having a role that has depth and variation, which he has absolutely thrived in here. In the theatre, there was plenty of laughter, plenty of oohs and ahhs, and just enough quiet and tender moments spread out to keep viewers on their toes. The graphics for the film for great as you would expect from a big budget movie these days, so not a lot to say there (although I am certainly not a expert on Graphics).
The actual person can fall away into the shadow of the hero’s persona. But they did a very good job of not making too much of it about Iron Man (your traditional superhero movie where it's a clash of superpowers in big battles, which can get old quickly if not done right). The main base to the plot is very relevant to issues of today, and near all of it seemed possible/believable (made the movie feel realistic, not gimmicky or clichéd). One major reason this movie is being successful, and I think will continue to be, is that it felt like you were watching a great movie, not just a cool superhero movie. Possibly why Superman and Batman (although I expect the Dark Knight to make all the previous Batman movies to hang their heads in shame) thus far have not been a huge success awards wise (I think Spiderman is an example of superheroes done right, well, most of the time).
Gwyneth Paltrow I thought was near her best. She played her role with real class, and again really believable. I would not say it was an exciting role, but I would say that It was a vital role, and don't think anyone could have done it better than her. This would be the part where I say well done to whoever did the casting; I believe they were absolutely spot on with the actors and actresses in this film.
I have also got to give congratulations to John Favreau. Directing only his third movie (although an experienced actor), his 2 others being Elf (Starring Will Ferrell) and Zathura, this has got to shoot him right up the list of impressive new directors after his previous 2 did not really seem to make much of an impact.
Some of the credit also has to go to writers, as this was certainly a great story, and one I would not mind experiencing over an over again.
We start off with a very good movie, potentially one of the best for this year. I would recommend this movie to everyone. A true must see in my eyes.A deserved 8.5/10 from me.
Next movie up will be the NZ premiere of Indiana Jones, and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That's tonight, so I'll post what it's like the next day.
